LONGVIEW, Texas – It’s a full contact sport. On skates.
But it’s not hockey. It’s roller derby and it’s making a big comeback.
In East Texas there are three teams. There’s The Dogwood Holy Rollers, Madams of Mayhem and The East Texas Bombers.
The women who make up these squads are nurses, teachers, welders and much more.
However, when they hit the track they become someone else. In fact, they even give themselves cool nicknames like “Slam” “Betty Blackout” “Motley Bruise,” well you get the point.
Roller derby is a full contact sport. It’s a game that pits two teams of up to 14 players against one another.
Each team has 5 players on the track at once. 4 blockers and one jammer. Jammers are identified by the star on their helmet and they score the points. Every time they overlap opposing players they get a point. The 4 blockers try to keep that from happening.
For many, roller derby is a place to let out the stresses that life brings, but for some it’s been a place where they don’t feel left out.
The training process is easy for some. Starting off they teach you how to fall down properly because there’s a lot of that.
According to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, roller derby is the fastest growing sport in the world. And for some they hope that’s just the beginning.
